The calendar of upcoming stuff, nostalgic in nature...

 

Here's what's happening with HistoricRenoPreservationSociety:

  • Jan. 27: "35 Years of Casino Entertainment History in Northern Nevada" Mel Shields, Washoe County School District teacher and local entertainment reviewer for Variety, Daily Variety, Showtime and the Sacramento Bee, shares anecdotes about his years covering entertainment and many of the stars that have performed in Reno over the past 35 years.

  • Feb. 24: "Baseball in Nevada" Tim Mueller, local author and baseball fan, shares his baseball knowledge with a slide show on the history of baseball in Nevada. Mueller wrote "Homeruns and Jackpots: Baseball in Nevada."

  • March 24: "Reno's New Preservation Projects" Kelly Rae of HabeRae Investments will present a slide show illustrating her adaptive-reuse projects: the Firehouse on Morrill Avenue and the V&T houses on Center Street.

     

  • April 28: "Nevada's Insane Asylum" Kim Henrick and Rosie Cevasco share the history of the state's mental health system.

    Can tell you that Larry Wood, who's father Jim owned Gray Line Scenic Tours and Virginia-Truckee Transit bus lines - and your cheerful webmaster, who used to drive a bus for Larry's dad while in college (Karl, not Jim) are speaking in May about the grand days of tourism in Reno and how the buses fared during the VIII Squaw Olympics, the filming of The Misfits, and we'll even show you Tina the Elephant from the Nugget inside a GMC 4104 coach!
